The waters and skies around Drake Bay host some of the most concentrated wildlife in the Eastern Pacific. Humpback whales from both hemispheres use this stretch of coast to breed, calve, and raise their young, which means the Osa Peninsula is one of the only places on Earth with two whale watching seasons in the same year.

The waters between Drake Bay and Caño Island rank among the most productive cetacean corridors in the Pacific. North Pacific humpback whales arrive between December and March; South Pacific humpbacks follow from July through October — giving Drake Bay two distinct whale watching seasons that together cover most of the year.

The Corcovado tour focuses on guided hiking inside the national park — primary jungle, large mammals, and strict SINAC permits required. The Wildlife Watching tour covers a broader range of ecosystems: ocean, river, and forest. It is more varied in species and habitats, and does not require park entry permits. If you want maximum variety across land, water, and sky — Wildlife Watching is the right choice.
Drake Bay is one of the few places in the world with two annual humpback whale seasons. The first runs from July to October — North Pacific humpbacks. The second runs from December to April — South Pacific humpbacks. Both seasons bring mothers with calves, breaching adults, and frequent close encounters. Dolphin sightings — bottlenose and spinner — occur year-round on the Pacific crossing.

Yes — it is one of the most family-friendly experiences available from Drake Bay. The dolphin and whale watching tour requires no hiking and is suitable from age 4. The birdwatching and Tapir Trail tours are suitable from age 6. Our guides adapt the pace and storytelling to the group — children often spot wildlife before the adults do.

Yes. All tours operate year-round from Drake Bay. Each season offers different highlights: dry season (December–April) brings easier trails and South Pacific humpbacks; wet season (May–November) brings peak birdlife, North Pacific humpbacks from July, and a more intimate experience with fewer visitors. There is no poor season — only different wildlife calendars.
We recommend booking 5 to 7 days in advance during wet season and at least 2 weeks ahead during dry season — peak travel months fill quickly. Unlike Corcovado, Wildlife Watching tours do not require SINAC permits, which gives more scheduling flexibility.
