Wildlife Watching Tours in Drake Bay

The waters and skies around Drake Bay host some of the most concentrated wildlife in the Eastern Pacific. Humpback whales from both hemispheres use this stretch of coast to breed, calve, and raise their young,  which means the Osa Peninsula is one of the only places on Earth with two whale watching seasons in the same year.

Year-round, spinner and bottlenose dolphins surf the bow wake of our boats, scarlet macaws commute in flocks of dozens along the coastline, and the Sierpe River delta shelters an ecosystem that has changed little since the pre-Columbian cultures carved their petroglyphs into the riverbank stones. These are not zoo encounters.

This is real wildlife, behaving naturally, in the habitat it has occupied for millions of years.

Dolphin and Whale Watching Tour

The waters between Drake Bay and Caño Island rank among the most productive cetacean corridors in the Pacific. North Pacific humpback whales arrive between December and March; South Pacific humpbacks follow from July through October — giving Drake Bay two distinct whale watching seasons that together cover most of the year.

Our 4 to 5-hour tour aboard a custom dive boat takes you into these feeding and breeding grounds, where encounters include full breaches, tail slaps, pectoral fin displays, and, in season, mothers nursing newborn calves.

When the whales are resting or absent, spinner dolphins – often in groups of 50 or more – take over, and spotted dolphins, false killer whales, and manta rays round out what is consistently one of the most varied marine wildlife tours in Costa Rica.

Birdwatching Tour:
The Osa Peninsula's 400 Species

The Osa Peninsula holds more bird species per square kilometer than anywhere else in Costa Rica — and Costa Rica holds more bird species per square kilometer than the entire United States. The math is staggering, and the experience matches it.

This full-day birdwatching tour departs at 6:00 AM to catch the most active two hours of the bird day, combining forest trails with coastal and riverbank habitat to maximize species diversity.

Scarlet macaws, boat-billed herons, orange-collared manakins, black-and-white hawk-eagles, and all six kingfisher species found in Costa Rica are all possible in a single morning.

Your guide carries a spotting scope and carries extensive local knowledge of seasonal patterns, nesting sites, and the specific fruiting trees that pull rare species into view. Suitable for all levels, from first-time birders to serious listers.

✅ Includes: Certified naturalist guide · Spotting scope · Water and snacks
📍 Departure: 6:00 AM | Return: ~2:00 PM
💰 Price: $55 per person

Sierpe Mangrove Tour:
Wildlife by Riverboat

The Sierpe River delta is the largest mangrove ecosystem on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast — and one of the most overlooked wildlife destinations in the country. This half-day riverboat journey departs at 6:00 AM, traveling upstream through a network of channels where the water turns the color of dark tea and the canopy closes overhead. American crocodiles rest on exposed roots.

Neotropical river otters dive ahead of the boat. Roseate spoonbills, boat-billed herons, and ringed kingfishers work the shallows. Along the banks, pre-Columbian stone spheres and petroglyphs left by the Diquís culture remind you that humans have been drawn to this river for over a thousand years. A completely different ecosystem from the forest or the ocean — and the best possible complement to a Corcovado or dive day.

✅ Includes: Certified naturalist guide · Riverboat · Water and snacks.
📍Departure: 6:00 AM | Return: ~1:00 PM.
💰 Price: $110 per person (minimum 4 guests).

Frequently Asked Questions About Wildlife Watching Tours in Drake Bay

The tour includes a certified bilingual naturalist guide, round-trip boat transport from Agujitas, binoculars, water and trail snacks, and full logistics. Depending on the experience chosen — birdwatching, dolphin and whale watching, Tapir Trail, or Sierpe mangrove — specific inclusions may vary. All options have a maximum of 8 guests per guide.

The Corcovado tour focuses on guided hiking inside the national park — primary jungle, large mammals, and strict SINAC permits required. The Wildlife Watching tour covers a broader range of ecosystems: ocean, river, and forest. It is more varied in species and habitats, and does not require park entry permits. If you want maximum variety across land, water, and sky — Wildlife Watching is the right choice.

Drake Bay is one of the few places in the world with two annual humpback whale seasons. The first runs from July to October — North Pacific humpbacks. The second runs from December to April — South Pacific humpbacks. Both seasons bring mothers with calves, breaching adults, and frequent close encounters. Dolphin sightings — bottlenose and spinner — occur year-round on the Pacific crossing.

Depending on the tour chosen, common sightings include humpback whales, bottlenose and spinner dolphins, scarlet macaws, toucans, 465+ bird species, Baird's tapir, howler and spider monkeys, caimans, and poison dart frogs. The Sierpe mangrove tour adds river wildlife including American crocodiles and herons. No single tour covers everything — your guide will help you choose the experience that matches your priorities.

Yes — it is one of the most family-friendly experiences available from Drake Bay. The dolphin and whale watching tour requires no hiking and is suitable from age 4. The birdwatching and Tapir Trail tours are suitable from age 6. Our guides adapt the pace and storytelling to the group — children often spot wildlife before the adults do.

Prices start from $55 per person for the birdwatching tour. Dolphin and whale watching, Tapir Trail, and Sierpe mangrove tours are priced separately. All prices include guide, transport, binoculars, water and snacks. There are no hidden fees on the day. Contact us directly for current pricing and availability for your dates.

Yes. All tours operate year-round from Drake Bay. Each season offers different highlights: dry season (December–April) brings easier trails and South Pacific humpbacks; wet season (May–November) brings peak birdlife, North Pacific humpbacks from July, and a more intimate experience with fewer visitors. There is no poor season — only different wildlife calendars.

We recommend booking 5 to 7 days in advance during wet season and at least 2 weeks ahead during dry season — peak travel months fill quickly. Unlike Corcovado, Wildlife Watching tours do not require SINAC permits, which gives more scheduling flexibility. Contact us directly by WhatsApp or email — we confirm availability and guide assignment within 24 hours.
